2020 WMHS Summer Reading Assignment
How many books do I have to read? What are the required titles?
Students are challenged to read four titles this summer. It is our recommendation that one of the titles be a STEAM book (any non-fiction book that explores the topics of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, or Math). The most important thing about our program is that YOU choose books that you will enjoy. The Lucius Beebe Library has created suggested summer reading lists just to give you some ideas, but ultimately you can read whatever you would like to read.
Do I have a summer reading assignment or writing requirement?
There is no assignment attached to the general summer reading program, but if you are taking an AP course your teachers may assign other work or titles (AP Lang/Lit, AP US History, AP Gov, etc). Your teachers may speak with you in the fall about the books you read. We will also have a summer reading discussion in an extended homeroom period.
How can I access free materials while physical library buildings are closed?
Wakefield Public School students (and anyone who currently resides in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts) can access online/digital library books, magazines, audiobooks, and films using either the Boston Public Library or Wakefield's Lucius Beebe Library. Registration for an eCard takes a few minutes and will give access to Hoopla (comics, graphic novels, eBooks, movies), Overdrive (audiobooks/ebooks), RB Digital (audiobooks and magazines), Kanopy (critically acclaimed films), and many other other online subscription services for free. Looking for something specific? Reach out to Mrs. Ho from the WMHS library or one of the librarians at the Beebe Library.
::Questions?::
Excited about a particular book and want to share with someone? Need help? If you are a student or a guardian of a student at WMHS, please reach out to Mrs. Diana Ho, the Librarian at WMHS.
::Other Summer Reading Opportunities::
Perhaps it goes without saying, the Beebe Library in Wakefield is a magical place. In spite of everything going on in the world they are trying their hardest to make books available online and to give teens chances to learn and interact through their teen programming. Ms. Casey Chwiecko (the Young Adult Librarian at the Beebe) created a short video to walk you through some of the free programs and apps that you can use this summer. These programs include crafting; Dungeons and Dragons groups; free magazine, audiobooks, ebook apps; etc. Also, she speaks briefly about what the library will look like over the summer (COVID closure, reopening structure). Questions? Again, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Ho or the folks over at the Beebe Library.
